There are many people who know something about ruminant animal agriculture and the essential role it plays in meeting the needs of today’s world and the world of 2050. Their expertise may be in some aspect of soil, plant, animal or human health. Or it may be in topics related to environmental stewardship, public policy, or sustainable development. The Ruminati is my attempt to assemble them and introduce them to each other. The goal of this sodcast (see what I did there?) is to make their information more widely known. Welcome to the herd!

Tuesday Apr 13, 2021
Fred Provenza is professor emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University. At Utah State, Provenza directed an award-winning research group that pioneered understanding of how learning influences foraging behavior and how behavior links soils and plants with herbivores and humans. Provenza is one of the founders of BEHAVE, an international network of scientists and land managers committed to integrating behavioral principles with local knowledge to enhance environmental, economic, and cultural values of rural and urban communities.
The many awards he received for research, teaching, and mentoring are the creativity that flowed from warm professional and personal relationships with over 75 graduate students, post-doctoral students, visiting scientists, and colleagues. Along with colleagues, he authored over 250 publications in scientific journals and books. His first book was Foraging Behavior. He co-authored a second book with Michel Meuret, The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders. His latest book, Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us about Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom, will be published by Chelsea Green in November of 2018. He has been an invited speaker at over 400 conferences.

The Ruminati are a bunch of Herd Quitters!
Kit Pharo started out in 1985 by leasing grassland and buying cows. In the beginning, he strived to build a herd that would wean bigger calves. He quickly learned that increasing weaning weights did not increase profit. Therefore, Kit changed his management style to be profit-driven instead of production-driven. He implemented management practices that reduced and eliminated expenses while implementing ways to increase beef production per acre – as compared to beef production per cow.
During the last 35 years, Kit has grown his ranch into a very profitable family operation. Pharo Cattle Company produces and markets over 1000 forage-developed bulls every year. Over the years, Kit has come up with several no-nonsense ways to put profitability back into ranching. He is internationally known as a successful rancher and businessman. He publishes a quarterly newsletter that is sent out to over 22,000 people. He also sends out weekly emails to over 17,000 people. To subscribe to his free newsletters and emails, visit:

Tuesday Mar 23, 2021
Amanda Radke is a fifth-generation rancher from Mitchell, S.D., who has dedicated her career to serving as a voice for the nation’s farmers and ranchers. Since 2008, Rake has tackled hot indus-try issues on the BEEF Daily blog for BEEF Magazine, where she provides tools and strategies for producers to effectively engage with consumers and counter negative media articles on social media.
A former National FFA Extemporaneous Speaking Champion and National Beef Ambassador, Radke has spent the last 15 years on the road fighting for the agriculture, rural America and the western way of life. She believes food security is national security, and her work is focused on keeping producers on the land and ensuring every citizen has access to safe, affordable and nu-tritious food in this country.
When she’s not blogging or speaking, Radke is penning agriculturally-accurate children’s books to help promote agricultural literacy in schools. Her titles include, “Levi’s Lost Calf,” “Can-Do Cowkids,” “A Home Run For Peanuts” and “The Soil Quilt.” Radke is determined to teach kids about where their food comes from to help the upcoming generation of consumers be both in-formed and empowered at the grocery store.

37 R. David (RD) Dikeman, PhD

Thursday Mar 11, 2021
United States scientist RD Dikeman is the father of a type 1 son, Dave. Together they produce, Dr. Richard Bernstein's Diabetes University (a series of free videos on YouTube on how best to manage diabetes). He is also co-founder of TYPEONEGRIT (Low carb for type 1 diabetes), a Facebook group for folks aged between one to 81 all following a low-carb approach, all with normal blood sugars, all thriving. RD’s son, Dave, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2013. Like most families, they were sent home with a diet plan consisting of 40 to 60 g CHO per meal plus 15g snacks. Watching his son’s blood glucose fluctuate wildly after a near death from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) was “parent torture to the first degree”. Knowing nothing about human nutrition or diabetes management, he and his family were lucky enough to find "Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution". They immediately began to follow Dr Bernstein’s prescription. Dave has been following a low-carb high-protein diet ever since and is thriving. His growth is on track. No hypoglycemia, no hyperglycemia, no DKA, no threat of complications. “Hope is restored.” Oh, and their family follows a low-carb diet, too, and RD's health is better, too!
